Course Overview:

Advanced Algebra 7 Students will be using the Algebra 1 McDougal Littell Textbook. We will be covering chapters 3-13 (solving linear equations, graphing linear equations and functions, writing linear equations, solving and graphing linear inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents and exponential functions, polygons and factoring, quadratic equations and functions, radicals and geometry connections, rational equations and functions, probability, and data analysis) as well as a geometry unit.

Approximate point total per trimester: (750-800 points per trimester)

· Tests 150-200 points

· Pop Quizzes 60 points

· Projects 75 points

· Extra Credit 50 points

· Homework (@20 points per week) 300 points

· Problem of the Day (P.O.D.) Quizzes 140 points

Necessary Materials:

1. Scientific Calculator (I recommend a TI-30XIIS. You can buy them from Office Depot for about $13)

2. Wide Ruled Paper

3. Graph Paper

4. Pencils (A lot of pencils)

ADVANCED ALGEBRA 7

Grading Procedures:

1. Tests are worth 100 points; Section Quizzes are worth 50 points; Problem of the Day (P.O.D.) Quizzes and Pop Quizzes may be given periodically and will vary in points. Retakes of tests and quizzes are allowed with a grade that is below 70%. In order to retake a test or quiz, the retake must be done within the designated time (within 5 days from the time it was returned). I will average the grades and record the new points. The highest I will raise a grade is to a “C” - 70%. Retakes are only offered in Trimesters 1 and 2.

2. Special Projects are worth 75 points and will be assigned throughout the school year (approximately one per trimester). They will be introduced and begun in class. However, work is expected to be done outside of school.

3. Homework will not be collected daily. I will check-in homework and assign up to four points. In order to earn all 4 points, homework is in on time, in pencil, and ALL work is shown. Work should not be answers only. Points will be deducted accordingly. Homework will be accepted late, but partial credit will be applied. However, after mid-term progress report go home, no homework will be accepted late.

4. Extra Credit will be offered throughout the trimester (approximately three times per trimester). Students are expected and encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities available all trimester long.

DIFFERENTIATION EXPLANATION

FYI- Differentiation is a process teachers use to maximize student learning by improving the match between a student’s unique characteristics and the curriculum. Since math is sequential, students are put in different groups to best suit their needs.
Offering a variety of math classes is one way District 97 differentiates instruction, process, and assessment.
Next 7 students are derived from the Math 7 class. Students periodically take pretests to determine mastery of concepts prior to instruction. Students are grouped and regrouped according to their performance on the pretest (90% or better). These students are assigned alternate, more challenging, homework and evaluations.

Weekly study sessions help meet the need of those students who demonstrate a need for concept reinforcement. All students are welcome to come throughout the school year. Students may use this as an opportunity for clarification and/or re-teaching of the concepts already presented during class. Study sessions are used as needed.

Academic Studies helps meet the needs of students who have not met the standards for the previous school year. This is a class designed to help boost student's skills in math and reading. Students are identified for placement into this class at the start of the year by the administration.
